Anzan is mental calculation done without the abacus in front of you: a competitive discipline in Japan. Answer as many as you can before the clock runs out.

How to play

An equation is shown with a countdown timer. Tap the correct answer from the four options below. Each correct answer extends your time slightly; wrong answers cost you seconds.

Objective

Solve as many equations as possible before time expires.

Strategy tips

  1. Round and adjust: for 47 + 38, compute 50 + 38 = 88, then subtract 3 → 85. Rounding first is almost always faster than left-to-right addition.
  2. Multiply by 9 with the "10 − 1" trick: 9 × 8 = (10 × 8) − 8 = 80 − 8 = 72. This avoids needing to recall the times table directly.
  3. Use answer choices as a check: if the choices are 72, 75, 78, 81, and your rough estimate is about 75, you can confirm precision with a smaller calculation.
